Expand Your Football Coverage With Soccer Shout
Many of you may not know who Phil McThomas and Tony Wildey are, but you should. They're the co-hosts of Soccer Shout, the daily podcast about British football. Each episode is 30 minutes, so it's the perfect listen on your weekday morning commute. The podcast sums up the latest news of the day, analyzes results and gives previews of upcoming matches.
If you haven't had a chance, be sure to listen to an episode today. The latest one is where I guest co-hosted with Phil (sorry for the audio technical difficulties), but their next new episode will be on Sunday when Tony returns.
Editor's Note: During the episode, Phil and I gave our predictions for this weekend's matches. Out of the nine matches, I got all of the predictions correct except for two matches. I thought Chelsea would beat Villa 1-0 or 2-0. And I thought Blackburn v Wigan 0-0 or 1-1. Not too shabby.

Argentina Switches Onto West Ham
By Dan Horlock, EPL Talk CorrespondentFrom Cordoba, Argentina
The arrival of two World Cup stars to an English team renowned for work ethic and devoid of any big name players came as a huge surprise to the majority of football fans around the globe.
Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano have had a little over three weeks to acclimatise to the hustle and bustle of the English Premier League but already they have shown an indication of their quality, even if results have not gone their way.
The interest generated by the Argentine pair when they put pen to paper in London was extraordinary, as the media scrambled to catch a glimpse of the duo. Press conferences were full and rumours were rife as to the intricacies of the deal.
However, the new fascination the English press and English Premier League followers have with Tevez and Mascherano is nothing in comparison to the response back home in Argentina.
Already the West Ham shirt has become a must have item for those following Argentine players overseas, as Villarreal, Corinthians and Barcelona proved before.
But for the major impact one need look no further than the television channel Fox Sports, the host of English Premier League football in Argentina.
The coverage in the pre-Tevez/Mascherano era was comparable to a 1970’s version of Match Of The Day, a presenter with dark, shaggy hair, Juan Manuel Pons, fronting a dark blue background with white spots that regularly gave the viewer a headache.
The show was produced on a tight budget and as a consequence English football in Argentina – against its Spanish and Italian rivals on ESPN – undoubtedly appeared inferior.
However, since the arrival of the Argentine pair in London, Pons, and his co-commentator Christian Bassedas, the former Newcastle player, have been given, amongst other things, a professional news desk from which to work.
The studio is now decorated in a modern, light blue colour and the commentators are surrounded by plasma screens showing action from previous games that would not look out of place on Sky Sports – highlighting the channel’s expectancy of higher viewing figures.
In regards to the coverage, ‘Bambino’ Pons, as he is more commonly known, still likes to sing tribute songs to the scorer after each goal and provides an irritatingly biased account of the game on behalf of his countrymen; his insistent begging of Jose Mourinho last season to bring Hernan Crespo into the action mirrored that of a child pleading for their parents attention.
But his behaviour is merely representative of a country that is desperate to see their players achieve in football’s upper echelons.
For example, in the newspaper ‘Ole,’ the country’s biggest selling football daily, they scoffed at Alan Pardew’s reasoning for Carlos Tevez’s substitution against Newcastle United, when he said, ‘We needed goals.' An entire page was allotted to the apparent ludicrousness of the statement.
Argentine media and fans alike share a fierce sense of loyalty towards their players, demonstrated by the fact that in both quarters West Ham has become known as Tevez and Mascherano’s team.
This season, the satellite provider, DirectTV has also introduced a new channel that provides exclusive footage of all the Premier League’s major games with English commentary, featuring the likes of Alan Parry and John Champion. Together with Fox Sports, the two channels have English football completely covered.
The weekend’s action generally begins on Saturday at 8.45 (12.45 GMT), followed by the 15.00 kick-off (11 AST) with the day’s football concluding at 13.15 or (17.15 GMT). Fox Sports usually broadcasts two of the three matches.
Depending on the quantity of games, Sunday and Monday’s action normally sees just two matches. Sunday at 12.00 (16.00 GMT) on DirectTV and Monday at 16.00 (20.00 GMT) on Fox Sports.
However, while English football has changed beyond recognition in Argentina a glance at ESPN’s coverage of the Champions League first fixtures demonstrates that there is still much to do for the most popular league in the World to win over Argentine and South American audiences.
While Liverpool were visiting PSV Eindhoven and Chelsea were playing host to Werder Bremen, Argentine viewers were being treated to Barcelona’s 5-0 demolition of a very poor Levski Sofia side or as an alternative, Sporting Lisbon’s 1-0 victory over Inter Milan.
The same was true on the second day of the Champions League. At the same time as England was enjoying the thrills and spills of the Battle of Britain between Manchester United and Celtic, ESPN in Latin America preferred to screen AC Milan’s 3-0 thumping of AEK Athens and Real Madrid’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Lyon.
In this continent, Spain’s La Liga is King and to replace it as the most popular European League, the English Premiership will have to change its language, culture and history.
However, overtaking Italy’s Serie A, which has been relegated to ESPN + with only the major games being shown, the English Premier League is at last beginning to show its teeth in this part of the world.
Tevez and Mascherano may well be household names in England now but their impact over the other side of the Atlantic reaches far beyond a few more West Ham shirts being sold on the streets of Buenos Aires.
Courtesy of the ‘Hammers,' the English Premier League has finally arrived on Argentine television.
Most Memorable Matches So Far This Premiership Season
Let's take a step back for a minute regarding this Premiership season, and consider how many matches we've seen on TV that have been absolutely enthralling matches where both teams produced a fantastic competitive display. So the question is, what have been the most memorable matches so far this season? And have there been fewer entertaining matches than in previous seasons?
Share your opinion by clicking on the 'Comments' button below and telling us what you think.
For me, the best match of the season thus far was the 1-1 draw between West Ham and Aston Villa that marked the debut of Carlos Tevez. The match was played at a frenetic pace with both teams playing an attacking style of play. There were several goalline clearances, a header that hit the bar. But, overall, the style of play was brilliant.
The 3-0 Everton win against Liverpool was entertaining, but it doesn't count in my book because Liverpool didn't show up to play that day. Reading against Manchester United was entertaining, but the first half was lukewarm. Liverpool against Newcastle featured some wonderful goals, but again, the first half was uneventful, and the match was far from being a classic in the usual Liverpool v Newcastle calibre.
Chelsea against Liverpool left a bitter taste in my mouth especially during the first half with lots of fouls and the Blues just walking across the pitch in slow motion.
The only match, other than West Ham against Aston Villa, that I can consider a classic was the Man United versus Arsenal match. There was the penalty incident, and Jens Lehmann getting hit in the face by the ball. Plus there were several other interesting subplots. While it wasn't a classic in its purest form, it's the only other match that can come close to rivaling the Hammers against Villa.
Thoughts?

English Clubs Flourish in Champions League
It's been an excellent week for English teams in Europe this week. Chelsea had a convincing 3-1 win against Levski Sofia tonight with Drogba getting a well-deserved hat trick in a tense Bulgarian stadium. Anyone notice the huge amounts of armed police (or were they soldiers) lined up alongside the pitch?Liverpool meanwhile has finally started to score some goals in Europe. The Reds are really finding their form with Rafa Benitez's rotation system paying dividends with both Dirk Kuyt and Peter Crouch scoring goals of late. In fact, Crouch's volley tonight was absolutely spectacular.
Speaking of spectacular goals, Arsenal did well to overcome Porto with Henry again getting a header. We discussed Man United's crucial win against Benfica in yesterday's blog.
Lastly, while you never want to see players get injured, Chelsea fans have to be relieved to see that Samuel Eto'o will be out for 2 months and will miss the two Chelsea against Barcelona matches.

Man United Take Control of Group F
A good win for Manchester United tonight in a match that was always going to be difficult against Benfica. It wasn't the most beautiful thing to watch, and there were moments where I was reminded why Portugal was despised so much during the World Cup. In this one, Benfica's diving and overacting was extremely disappointing.Louis Saha showed a touch of brilliance as swayed to the left, picked up speed and sent a curving left footed shot in over the keeper. Wayne Rooney, on the other hand, was extremely poor -- as he has been since he returned from suspension. I'm really surprised Sir Alex Ferguson keeps faith with Rooney. Instead, he should be playing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer more often who has showed class every time he comes on the field.
That said, this was an important three points for United. They're in pole position in their Champions League group. Plus, they can now focus on their next match which will be this Sunday at home against Newcastle United (9am ET, Setanta Sports). It's imperative that United pick up the points against Glenn Roeder's team to keep the pressure on Chelsea and to stay near the top of the pack.

Fox Soccer Channel Advertising at St. James's Park
Okay traditional football fans, I need your feedback. If you're very observant or perhaps a Newcastle fan, did you notice in yesterday's Everton match at St. James's Park that there was a "Fox Soccer Channel" advertising board behind the goal when Ameobi "beat" the offside trap and scored that cheeky goal for Newcastle? It's not easy to see, but if you go back and watch the match, you may notice it. This is the first time I've noticed it, so the advertising signboard may have been there much longer. Or has it?
Why FSC decided to advertise and why at St. James's Park, I'm not sure. The majority of Geordies would have no idea what it is, but the TV viewers at home (throughout North America, the Middle East and now Jamaica) would -- but they're probably subscribing to Fox Soccer Channel already.
Editor's Note: I contacted Fox Soccer Channel to find out more information, and here's their answer. They've been adding signage at EPL games so FSC viewers like you and me would get excited about seeing it during matches. Last year they had board graphics at St James' Park and the City of Manchester Stadium. This year, Fox has entered a deal whereby they can have signage at two spots per game at St James' Park, Bolton's Reebok Stadium and Blackburn's Ewood Park. These were chosen based on matches that will be aired for North American viewers.
Top 10 Premiership Goals So Far This Season
I need your help to determine what are the top 10 Premiership goals so far this season. Here are the obvious candidates, but let me know which ones we're missing. These, right now, are in no particular order:- Drogba's scintillating twist, turn and rocket for Chelsea against Liverpool.
- Xabi Alonso's wonderful long-range lob from 70 yards for Liverpool against Newcastle.
- Arsenal's beautiful interplay between Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas and goalscorer William Gallas for the Gunners against Sheffield United.
- The one-two between Tim Cahill and Andrew Johnson for Everton against Watford, which led to AJ's precise goal.
- Ivan Campos long-range daisycutter for Bolton against Spurs.

Premiership Football Fever Spreading Through U.S.
Scott Coonfare owns a sports restaurant in downtown Tampa, not far from the Buccaneers stadium (Tampa Buccaneers that is, not Manchester). The appropriately named "Coonfare's Sports Cafe" has jerseys from Premiership clubs framed on the wall, features a Union Jack flag outside and serves fish-n-chips (alas without the mushy peas, according to Scott). At Coonfare's Sports Cafe, Fox Soccer Channel and Setanta Sports are always on. "It's amazing how many EPL fans there are in Tampa," says Scott. "It's like an underground group of people who are very true to the sport."
To keep his hungry soccer fans updated on all of the news about the Premiership, Scott has been promoting the EPL Talk web site in unique ways. So unique, in fact, that he's the winner of the autographed "Once In A Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos" poster signed by Giorgio Chinaglia and Shep Messing. Here's how Scott is getting the word out about EPL Talk:
- Scott created a free weekly newsletter, in the form of a flyer, named EPL Buzz and leaves it outside his restaurant for people to read a schedule of what matches will be shown on the restaurant's big screen TVs. Plus, the newsletter features the top Premiership headlines and informs readers that they can "find out more at epltalk.com."
- Outside the front door of Coonfare's Sports Cafe, Scott has placed two signboards for passerbys to see. The first has the daily specials. The second has the top Premiership headlines (taken from the news ticker at the homepage of EPL Talk), and the epltalk.com address. See picture here.
- Scott also prints copies of the EPL Talk Magazine, and puts them out by the front door for restaurant patrons to read.

Football News & Viewpoints From America
First, I'm concerned by Bolton manager Sam Allardyce's body language after his press conference on Friday. He looks visibly shaken and you can easily see that the pressure is having an effect on him already. To me, this was a surprise. I was not expecting to see Big Sam respond this way, and he must be under incredible pressure. Sadly, I really feel this is going to have a negative impact on Bolton.
Second, good news for ITVN customers who are on the East Coast of the U.S. ITVN is now offering two feeds of Setanta Sports, which you'll see by the 'Play 1' and 'Play 2' buttons on the Setanta/ITVN page. 'Play 2' should have an improved picture for people on the East Coast with less latency.
Third, I finally got a chance tonight to watch "Once In A Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of The New York Cosmos." Fantastic documentary, and it gives us hope of how big the game can get in America. After watching the film, I believe what the U.S. needs now is to host the World Cup. With South Africa's chances of hosting the 2010 World Cup dwindling, it could be perfect timing for the U.S. to step in.

Liverpool Back On Track After Win Against United
It's the result that Liverpool needed. A confidence boost. Two goals, and -- most importantly -- three points from a disappointing season thus far.Interestingly it was a midfielder who stole the headlines for Liverpool instead of a striker. Sure, Dirk Kuyt scored his first goal for the Reds but it was Xabi Alonso who was the key playmaker, threading a inch-perfect pass to Steve Finnan who crossed the ball in for Kuyt to slam it into the net.
Alonso scored Liverpool's second goal with a cheeky shot from behind the halfway line that floated over the sprawling Newcastle keeper. The goal was very reminscent of Alonso's goal for Pool against Luton last season in the FA Cup.
Despite the win, it's obvious that Liverpool still has problems. The home fixture against Newcastle is usually one of the most entertaining matches of the season, but this was mostly a drab affair in front of an unusually quiet Anfield.
To me, Liverpool's problem is that they appear too one-dimensional when they're on the attack. Too many times, it's a long ball floated in from inside the half into the edge of the penalty area. Opposing teams can see right through the Reds, and time after time, they extinguish Liverpool's attacks with ease.
Liverpool's key to success this season will be to get Jermaine Pennant on the field who can run down the wing and get behind defenses, and can cross the ball back into the penalty area -- creating havoc against opposition. We saw glimpses of how well this could work against Chelsea. And it gave Gerrard the freedom to do the same thing in equal measure down the left wing in that same match.
What Pennant needs, though, is consistency. He has the opportunity to be one of the shining stars in the Liverpool side this year, but he needs playing time. He wasn't even included in the team of 16 tonight against Newcastle.

Sirius Announce Exclusive Deal with Chelsea
Good news for Chelsea fans. Sirius Satellite and Chelsea today announced an agreement whereby the remaining Chelsea matches this season will be available exclusively on Sirius Satellite radio.Read the press release for more details. Each match will feature a 60-minute pre-game show with Giorgio Chinaglia and Charlie Stillitano.
Whether you're a Chelsea fan or not, if you take a step back and take into consideration some of the developments that have been made regarding the Premiership coverage in America the past few months, it's been astounding: Setanta Sports and Fox Soccer Channel working together to bring you more live Premiership coverage; Chelsea conducting their pre-season training in California, and all of the podcasts focused on Premiership football.
BBC Reveals Premiership Sides in Corruption Scandal
Here are the people who were named:
- Bolton manager Sam Allardyce: Agent Teni Yerima says he bribed the Bolton boss.
- Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp: Secretly filmed (then a Southampton manager) discussing with an agent the possibility of buying a Blackburn player (i.e. tapping up).
- Chelsea's director of youth football Frank Arnesen: Secretly filmed tapping up a 15-year-old Middlesbrough player.
- Newcastle assistant manager Kevin Bond: As former Portsmouth assistant manager, Panorama reveals he would consider receiving payments from an agent.
- Craig Allardyce, Big Sam's son: Allegedly received secret payments from agents involving three separate Bolton transfers.
It'll be interesting to see how this affects Allardyce and Redknapp. Their next match is against each other on Monday when Portsmouth entertain Bolton live on Fox Soccer Channel at 3pm ET. And it's going to be a true test of the character of two of the better English managers. Between now and Monday (and beyond), the focus will be on the scandals and the match will, unfortunately, be secondary.
To read BBC's version of the story, visit the Panorama link here. Unfortunately the Panorama TV episode will not be available via the BBC web site, but an abbreviated version will be. A transcript for the show may be released in the coming days. Click on the link above to learn more.
The Times newspaper of London is playing down the scandal. They believe Redknapp is in the clear after weak evidence. But the fallout from this one will definitely hurt Big Sam and Chelsea. The October 2nd findings from the Premier League into transfer irregulations can't come a minute too soon.
Chat with Football Fans Worldwide Every Saturday
There are lots of exciting developments happening behind-the-scenes at EPL Talk. As soon as the deals and arrangements are confirmed, I'll be sure to let you know. But it'll definitely be good news for EPL-mad fans such as yourself. In the meantime, I want to remind you to mark your calendar for this Saturday (and every Saturday) at 7:30am ET onwards. I'll be hosting a live online chat via webcam from the homepage of the EPL Talk web site (check out the "Stickam" player near the center of the page).
Why chat online you may ask? Well for many of us who are watching the matches at home, you can chat with fellow fans from around the world as the action unfolds on TV. Last Saturday we had football fans chatting from Jamaica, Japan and all across America. For example, last weekend we had a great discussion about memories of terracing at football matches and away fans being stuck in "pens," segregated areas fenced in to avoid hooligans fighting. Especially interesting was the Tokyo Toffeeman's vivid flashbacks to Everton's Goodison Park and how it differed in the late 70s compared to now.
(Plus you can get a glimpse of EPL Talk headquarters and see, if you're lucky, the two Brazilian cleaning girls who made a surprise visit a fortnight ago; ahem pictured above).
If you're front of a computer, we hope to see you online this Saturday! The early kick-off is Liverpool against Spurs at 7:30am ET, followed by Chelsea and Fulham, and Arsenal versus Sheffield United at 10am ET, then the Reading against Man United match at Noon ET, and Aston Villa versus Charlton at 2:15pm ET.

Surprises from Premiership Season Thus Far
As pundit Alan Hansen said, this past Sunday revealed to us that there isn't that much difference between the big four sides in the Premiership. And how refreshing is that. But what's apparent so far this season is that the pack of sides beneath the "big four" have improved.
Everton, Aston Villa, Portsmouth and Middlesbrough, for example, have astounded many with their results. Boro scalping Chelsea and drawing Arsenal were huge results for the Teeside club, while Portsmouth has been on fire. It is interesting to note, however, that the fixture list has been kind to Pompey. They've played Man City (awful so far this season), Boro (fell apart at the Riverside Stadium), Charlton (my relegation candidate), Wigan (desperately missing Jimmy Bullard) and Blackburn (most inconsistent side).
Despite Pompey's easier fixture list, the team is undoubtedly playing a fantastic brand of football.
Another team to be graced by the football fixture gods is Manchester United. Matches against Fulham, Charlton, Watford and a beleagured Spurs has helped United get a good start to the season. But United now have to face a stern challenge against Reading (away) and Newcastle (home) for the remainder of September.
But what about the frustrating performances from Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur? The Reds can't seem to buy a goal after losing 1-0 to Chelsea, drawing PSV Eindhoven 0-0 and being thrashed 3-0 by Everton. But in all three matches, Liverpool was agonizingly close to scoring. Kuyt hit the crossbar against Chelsea. Gerrard hit the post against PSV (and Everton). Luis Garcia also hit the post against Everton. Despite coming close so many times, the Liverpool side desperately needs to start winning to regain its confidence.
Setanta viewers will have a chance to see if Liverpool can accomplish that twice this week. First at home against Newcastle on Wednesday (3pm ET) and then on Saturday (7:45am ET) versus, gulp, Spurs.
What is ailing Spurs this season? Many blame the departure of Michael Carrick, but I believe the problem is more deep-rooted than that. The entire Spurs squad seems to lack the killer instinct that they had last season, but I wonder whether there's a bigger problem... namely Edgar Davids.
It was Davids, of course, that had the scuffle with fellow midfielder Didier Zokora. And I wonder whether this is just the tip of the iceberg. Davids performance on field has been below average, and he could be having a negative impact on the rest of the team.
What's bizarre about Tottenham is that they had a fantastic pre-season beating several big clubs and Defoe scored a handful of goals.
We'll see what develops this Saturday for the match against Liverpool. Whatever happens, please don't let it end up a nil-nil draw!
Could Bung Allegations Ruin Allardyce and Redknapp?
I spoke to my cousin who lives in London yesterday about the upcoming Panorama documentary from BBC and the potential scandal it may cause by revealing how prevalent bungs are in the Premiership. His verdict was that it's not going to make that much of a difference no matter how explicit the issue may be. His take is that the Premiership is too big of a business in Britain to be impacted by such revelations. If anything, some people inside the game may get a slap on the wrist but that's about it.
The Panorama episode, "Undercover: Football's Dirty Secrets," is scheduled to air on the BBC on Tuesday at 4pm ET. Unfortunately it won't be available via the BBC web site, but a condensed version is supposed to be made available (and possibly a transcript of the complete show). More information about the Panorama episode is available here. And you can read the undercover coach's story here.
And now comes the news that Sam Allardyce is planning on fighting back against the BBC's revelations. While Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp discussed the allegations in last Saturday's press conference, Big Sam has now gone on the attack.
The Times newspaper, meanwhile, is reporting that the Premier League may decide on October 2nd to deprive clubs of their use of agents. Read the story here.
Suffice to say, September 19th will be an interesting day in the history of English football. Let's see what develops and what impact it may have, if any, on the league we love.
Interview with Simon Inglis Now Available
Many of you may not know who Simon Inglis is, but you'll definitely remember his name after you listen to the latest episode of the EPL Talk Podcast, just released yesterday.Inglis is best known for his famous book, The Football Grounds of England and Wales, which was an exhaustive review from the mid 80s of each of the 92 stadiums in the top four divisions. Before Inglis, no one had really taken time to capture the grittiness and history of the stadiums. Every nook and cranny of the grounds was explored and detailed beautifully in his opus.
His timing couldn't have been better. The book was published in 1985 prior to the Taylor Report, so his accounts of the stadiums were frozen in time as he described the banks of terracing, pre-WW2 stands and unique characteristics (although many of the grounds were in a sorry state). After the Taylor Report was issued, football stadiums in Britain were never the same. Terracing was removed and all-seater stadiums became the norm, increasing the safety of spectators but reducing the atmosphere at the same time.
But Inglis is more than a football stadium expert. He's a storyteller and an expert speaker who unravels many of the mysteries of football (and sport) for us to enjoy. To me, his finest book is Engineering Archie, which tells the story of Archibald Leitch, the greatest football stadium architect of all time. But that's another story for another time.
Drogba Plays Perfect Game as Chelsea Grind Out Gutsy Win
By Mark Fishburn, EPL Talk correspondentDidier Drogba scored a goal of Peter Osgood quality today at Stamford Bridge today. Also, he won almost every ball against the defenders, playing at his most skillful and determined best. By the end of the game he was exhorting to the crowd to make more noise and was substituted by Mourinho in the 94th minute so the crowd could show their appreciation.
The game started with almost 100% of the possession in the first 15 minutes, but none of it to any effect or creativity. When they did finally get the ball, Liverpool had their sharpest period of the game. Ashley Cole who had a poor first half was nowhere to be seen when Kuyt received the ball on the edge of the area and smacked the angled shot against the bar over a beaten Cech. Worse was to follow for Cole playing next to John Terry and leaving acres of space for Pennant.
For the next 25 minutes neither team created a clear cut chance with Ballack noticeable for ponderous play and being caught in possession. Sheva must have given Tiger Woods a ticket but that’s about all he did, looking off the pace in stark contrast to Drogba.
Chelsea looked all at sea with Lampard and Ballack invisible and Essien not quite as sharp as previously. Cole is notably absent on the left until he made two poor crosses in rapid succession. Makelele has not started a single attack in this game.
Liverpool’s poor form continues though with Alonso a shadow of last year and Gerrard fleetingly in the game playing unusually on the left midfield. Bellamy looks threatening but Kuyt disappoints. Neither Liverpool wide men take advantage of possession and Chelsea can only muster a poor free kick by Lampard who continues his form with more poor passes.
Suddenly, out of the blue, Lampard loops a ball from the right to Drogba with his back to the Goal. He traps, turns and volleys round Carragher and a lead footed Reina into the net. Brilliant. It’s the kind of goal that makes you come back and makes your forget the previous stumbling 42 minutes. As the half ends Sissoko is lucky to stay on the pitch after two fouls, Gerrard roasts Boularouz and Ballack continues his miserable performance.
Chelsea start the second half brightly until Ballack inexplicably lets his foot stamp down on Sissoko in retaliation for another reckless tackle from the Liverpool player. Referee Riley has little choice but to send Ballack for a 3 game vacation, but ironically it could help Mourinho get back to a more fluent midfield over the next few games.
With Gerrard and co. getting more possession the chances start to come for Liverpool but they don’t convert. Gerrard finding himself unmarked 11 yards out but with too much time, only finds Petr Cech's left knee. Cole continues to give acres of space to Pennant but with no-one to tackle Pennant doesn’t get the ball to the byline and crosses poorly.
Chelsea meanwhile bring on Robben who immediately show that he has lost none of his pace nor ability to go to ground to create fouls. Sheva goes off avoiding eye contact with Tiger. Drogba is untiring in his challenges for the ball showing great skill.
As often happens Chelsea play more fluently with 10 men and Cole finally gets down the left but spoilt by a poor cross. If Bridge had been on the bench, Cole would be gone. Paulo Ferreira replaces Boularouz and looks surprisingly sharp. Meanwhile Kuyt blasts over the bar. Crouch comes on and joins Gerrard in the dog house by heading straight at Cech from 10 yards. Drogba’s adrenaline keeps going right to the end winning the ball and frustrating Liverpool.
At the end of a fast pace game Chelsea will blank out a dour first half with the satisfaction of gutsing out a win with ten men and knowing that they will have better shape for three games. Both john Terry and Carvahlo had good games. It seems more difficult to figure out why Liverpool are not clicking but last year’s Gerrard/Alonso engine is not working with the introduction of Sissoko. More work needed.
Chelsea Player Ratings
Cech 7 two reaction saves
Boularouz 6 overcommitted under pressure
Carvalho 7 caught out once but played well
Terry 8 commanding game in defense
Cole 4 had a wretched game
Essien 7 mistimed several passes but played with commitment
Makelele 6 not the usual Makalele
Ballack 3 a disappointing game anyway but inexcusably lost his head
Lampard 6 one weak shot one excellent pass
Sheva 5 the crowd have started groaning each time he loses the ball
Drogba 9 a brilliant all round contribution even without the great goal
Subs Ferreira and Robben played well.

Thoughts on Sunday's Premiership Clashes
Well, we always thought this Premiership season was going to be close, and after this weekend's matches we now have proof of that. While the Chelsea against Liverpool match left a bitter taste in my mouth, the Manchester United against Arsenal battle was another experience altogether. Beautiful flowing football, combined with sublime skills and plenty of drama, this was a match of REAL English football.
The less said about the Chelsea Liverpool match the better. Drogba's amazing turn and volley is what separated the sides, and what an incredible goal it was. Liverpool, meanwhile, will be hanging their head in shame after having so many chances to clinch this match.
As with previous Chelsea against Liverpool league matches, the display on the field was anticlimatic. Whenever I watched Chelsea in this match, they seemed to be just walking around the park, while Liverpool were venomous -- but impotent -- in attack.
Back to the United against Arsenal match, what a shame that Fox waited until the third minute of the match to show the United lineup, and disturbed the action again in the sixth minute when they showed the Arsenal lineup on-screen. It reminds me of ESPN and ABC's antics from the World Cup.

Jamie Trecker: This Is Your Life
Later this week I plan on interviewing soccer journalist Jamie Trecker for an upcoming episode of the EPL Talk Podcast. Many of you may have experienced his writing on FoxSoccer.com and his blog at http://www.jamietrecker.com But many of you, myself included, don't know much about Jamie in terms of where he grew up, who he supports, as well as how long he's been in the game, etc.
If you have any specific questions you'd like me to ask him (as long as the topic relates to the English Premier League), please post them here.
Warning Signs for English Clubs in Champions League
Arsenal is playing well in terms of passing the ball around, but is unable to score with Henry looking nothing like the threat that he's been in the past. Liverpool is far too inconsistent, and their defence is a leaky as a sieve. Chelsea is still trying to regain its form and fluid style of play, and they look vulnerable in the back. And Manchester United, while winning all of their matches, have yet to play against tough opposition.
It's entirely possible that Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal will drop points in their matches today and tomorrow, while Manchester United is the only one that should win all three points against a much weaker Celtic side. PSV Eindhoven, Werder Bremen and Hamburg are no walks in the park, and the English teams will have to play smart football in these opening matches.
Despite the uphill climb, it's imperative that the English clubs gain maximum points today and tomorrow.
My predictions: PSV Eindhoven 1-0 Liverpool, Chelsea 0-0 Werder Bremen, Hamburg 2-1 Arsenal and Manchester United 2-0 Celtic. Feel free to share your predictions by clicking on the 'Comments' link below.

Excellent Weekend for Americans in Premiership
Before Reading's match today against Manchester City, left winger - and American - Bobby Convey said it best:"It will be cool to play in a big game - the only game on the night. Night games under lights are always the most exciting ones. People back in the States will be working, as it will be two or three o'clock then, but they always have it on tape for later. Every time I go home more and more people know who I am and who I play for."
Judging by his performance tonight, even more people will recognize him after a beautiful curling left-foot free kick resulted in a header by Ivar Ingimarsson, leading to the only goal in the match. It was also a great night for goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, too. Both were buoyed by a surprisingly loud Reading crowd.
On Saturday, Brian McBride and Carlos Bocanegra scored the two Fulham goal's in their surprise 2-1 win at Newcastle.
Harry Redknapp to Appear in Undercover Interview
One week from today, the BBC will broadcast a documentary from their TV show called Panorama which will allegedly open wide the topic and controversy of bungs (i.e. illegal payments) in the Premiership transfer business.Interestingly, the BBC decided to create a fictitious agency that had U.S. funding. Thanks BBC. But for more insight into the upcoming piece, read this interesting article about Luton manager Mike Newell and the latest developments.
The article states that the fictitious agency had a meeting with Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp, who says in The Sun that he has nothing to fear and that he'll go after the BBC if they don't have their facts correct. Funnily enough, Redknapp lives on Panorama Road (no relation to the TV show), a so-called millionaire's row.

The Return of Roswell P. Shambling
The latest episode of the EPL Talk Podcast is now live featuring an interview with Adrian Sherling from Manchester Buccaneers fame. His real name was a closely guarded secret until only recently, but many of you may know him better as Roswell P. Shambling. If you're not acquainted with the Manchester Buccaneers, you may want to visit the blog first to get a taste for the hilarity.
Near the end of the podcast, we allude to a video you can see on this blog. Click the link here for a real laugh. And thanks to the Tokyo Toffeeman for the laughter.

Reality Shock for Current State of the Premiership
Saturday, September 09, 2006
Are Yanks Crazier About the Prem Than Brits?
As a Brit myself, this is going to shock a lot of people, but I honestly believe that American viewers of the Premiership are more passionate and bigger footy fans than those who live in Britain. Here are my reasons why:- What Brits would wake up on a Saturday morning at 4:30am or 7:30am local time to watch an English Premiership match on TV? Most Brits already complain about the "early" kickoff, which is at 12:45pm British time. But Americans don't complain and get up early every Saturday morning just for the pure delight of watching the Premiership in action.
- Americans are more likely to watch more Premiership matches than Brits. Because many Americans don't have a specific team that they support and instead watch the English Premier League as a neutral fan, they're more likely to watch more matches in a season than some Brits who won't watch their club's arch-rival because of their hatred for that team.
- Football fans in America get to watch more live Premiership matches than fans in Britain.
- If you think watching a Premiership match at 4:30am or 7:30am is bad enough, go back to the 2002 World Cup when matches -- depending on what your time zone in America -- were played at 2:30am, 5am and 7:30am (all times Eastern). Those same matches were played at the more reasonable times of 7:30am, 10am and 12:30pm British time.
- So while time zones don't favor the US viewers of the Premiership, consider another reason why Americans are crazier about the EPL than Brits: They have a greater hunger for it. While Major League Soccer (MLS) does its best to entertain Americans, it's a pale imitation of the world game (and the top English league). That's one of the reasons why Americans are flocking to the Premiership. Of course, we all know tons of other reasons why we love the league so much, but the point is that we can't get enough of it.
Questions for ITVN

Liverpool and Arsenal Stumble As Everton & Man U Fly High
What a day in the Premiership. In the early morning match, Everton thoroughly defeated Liverpool 3-0 with goals by Cahill and a brace from Andrew Johnson to move into joint-second in the league. In a woeful display by Liverpool, Jamie Carragher made an appalling defensive error to gift Everton their second goal. And to add insult to injury, Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina flubbed a shot that allowed Andrew Johnson to knock in Everton's third goal.
Arsenal, meanwhile, are on a path to disaster after a one all draw with Middlesbrough. The Gunners, yet again, tried to walk the ball into the net and Arsenal's Hleb was particularly guilty of passing when he should have banged the ball into the back of the net. Hats off to Boro, though, for a gritty defensive display, and it was nice to see Jonathan Woodgate back on the pitch in his central defender role. The Gunners now have only 2 points from 3 matches and are joint second from bottom.
Both Benitez and Wenger have serious problems to fix.
Man United had a comfortable win against Spurs. Chelsea eeked out a win against Charlton, while Sheffield United and Blackburn bored us with a nil-nil match. These are just a few thoughts from a great day in the Premiership.
What are your thoughts on today's matches and the reaction from the media?

Next 10 Days Crucial for Top Premiership Clubs
While I commented earlier this week on Chelsea's need to improve their style of play (and confidence) this Saturday and in the Champions League next Tuesday, the other clubs in the four horse race need to be equally as concerned.Between now and September 17, there's a good chance that a wider gap may open at the top of the Premiership if results go Man United's way. For example, if United can beat Spurs on Saturday, who interestingly has never won a Premiership match at Old Trafford, United will find themselves in the driving seat if Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea slip up on Sunday, September 17.
Reason being is that Man United will play Arsenal at Old Trafford on that date, who are beatable if the Gunners are unable to solve their lack of goalscoring. So if United manage to beat Spurs this Saturday and Arsenal the following Sunday, the Red Devils will have 15 points and will open up a gap at the top.
And, of course, the English clubs will have some tricky Champions League matches mid-week that could have a difference on the fitness and injury list for the Premiership matches beginning Saturday, September 16.
While Chelsea play Charlton this Saturday, the following Sunday they play Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. With Liverpool's new firepower playing well, can Crouch, Kuyt and company be the first team to beat Chelsea at home in years?
Note that both Arsenal and Liverpool have played one less match due to Champions League qualifying matches a fortnight ago.
Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 17th as we enjoy two six-pointer matches.
What are your predictions for the results of the matches involving the top clubs between now and then? See the latest schedule here,

Exciting Night in Euro 2008 Qualifying Football
What a magnificent night for European football. The plucky Northern Ireland, buoyed by their jubilant crowd at Windsor Park, shocked world football by defeating Spain 3-2. And France cruised to a comfortable and awe-inspiring 3-1 home win against World champions Italy. Add to that Scotland's crucial 2-1 away win in Lithunia, Germany's annihilation of San Marino (13-0) and England picking up a much-needed, and as predicted, tricky win against Macedonia (1-0) with a Peter Crouch goal.To appreciate the Northern Ireland win, you have to put the game into context based on Northern Ireland's recent track record of zero wins in eight wins of European qualifying football. Remember that Northern Ireland only has a population of 1.6 million, and its star players include Keith Gillespie (Sheffield United), David Healy (Leeds United) and Maik Taylor (Birmingham City).
And what a fantastic third goal by Healy to win the match with a beautifully chipped lob over Casillas in goal.
The match, which was shown on Setanta Sports, was reminiscent of Northern Ireland's previous shock win against Spain in the 1982 World Cup when Gerry Armstrong scored for Northern Ireland in a 1-0 win versus the host country.

ITVN Enhances Their Technology for Soccer Fans
I'm in football heaven right now. After one of those long days where all you want to do is go home and sink into your couch and put your feet up, I switched on ITVN and was pleasantly surprised to see that the new update is available. At the same time, I'm watching the Setanta feed of the France versus Italy qualifier played earlier today, and what a fantastic match it is.Regarding the new ITVN software upgrade, after following the easy-to-understand instructions and waiting approximately 60 minutes, the brand new interface was loaded and the look-and-feel of ITVN now looks a hundred times better.
For example, there's now a "Quick Launch" button from the main ITVN screen where you can go directly to Setanta instead of navigating through the menus like you previously had to.
The menus, meanwhile, have been updated and are easier to read and navigate. What's more, new features are available such as the Starz and Encore movie channels, a music channel with 1200 radio stations from around the world, a huge music video library with more than 1,000 titles, and even a karaoke feature that includes approximately 3,000 songs.
If you're not a ITVN customer yet, the new features (available at an additional cost) are definitely very tempting especially if you love watching movies, listening to music, playing music videos or having fun with karaoke.
ITVN, by the way, provides a set top box that you put on top of your TV. Plug your cable from your broadband modem into the set top box, and you can watch Setanta Sports for a monthly fee of $15. If you sign up for a 12 month agreement, you get the receiver for free. Installation is easy and takes approximately 10 minutes.
Order ITVN and get Setanta Sports via this link today.
In the meantime, I spoke with ITVN tonight about the screensaver feature which some readers complained about previously. Thanks to your feedback, they've decided to remove the screensaver feature, which may already have been put into effect. If not, it'll be removed by tomorrow.
The folks at ITVN welcome your feedback. Feel free to post your comments here -- either positive, negative or neutral -- and I'll be sure they hear from you.
Wembley Situation Going From Bad to Worse
The opening of Wembley Stadium could be delayed from 2007 until 2010. What a disgrace, and how does Multiplex get off on threatening to sue when they've obviously botched the whole project?

The Beginning of the End for Jose Mourinho
While most of the attention in the press is on England's tricky match against Macedonia, one must not overlook next week's Champions League matches which are going to be crucial for English teams such as Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United.Crucial because it can mean the difference between financial success or the sack. And the team that has the most to lose and the biggest mountain to climb is Chelsea.
So far this season the Blues are looking more like last year's Real Madrid than this year's Man United. Sure, the west London side hasn't had much time to gel, but Mourinho's side only has one match to prepare before they take on the razor sharp Werder Bremen next week.
How Chelsea performs in this Saturday's match (10am ET, live, Setanta) against Charlton will have a huge impact on Chelsea's Champions League match next Tuesday (2:30pm ET, live, Setanta). What Mourinho needs more than anything is for Chelsea to start playing the fluid style of passing football that they aced last season. We saw glimpses of it in their opening season match against Man City, but it was nowhere to be seen in their loss to Middlesbrough and their unimpressive 2-0 victory against Blackburn.
While Chelsea will be bolstered this Saturday with the arrival of Ashley Cole to the left back position, Mourinho still faces the quandary of what to do with Frank Lampard and Michael Ballack. Both players cancel each other out similar to how Gerrard and Lampard played together in the World Cup. While Steve McClaren keeps the faith with Lampard against Macedonia, does Mourinho have the fortitude to make the right decision and drop Lamps against Charlton?
If you're going to make a radical change as a manager to the lineup, Charlton is the opposition to do it against. To me, Iain Dowie's side is the weakest in the Premiership right now and will be in serious trouble this season. While he means well, Dowie is out of his league and his players will figure that out pretty soon, which will spell disaster for the side.
Speaking of potential disasters, Chelsea is going to have a rocky time against Werder Bremen next week. The German side has a good chance of winning the Bundesliga this season and, with a striker such as Miroslav Klose, they're the type of team that could nick one goal given a chance and hold on for a 1-0 win.
If so, Mourinho's head -- for the first time in his Chelsea career -- could be on the chopping block by Christmas unless the Blues can turn around their season.
The pressure is on, but let's see what champions are made of.
Thoughts?

Quality of Premiership Podcasts Improving
Take, for example, podcasts. The number of quality football podcasts is continuing to increase. A year ago, there was hardly anything available. Now there are more than two dozen.
The EPL Talk Podcast debuted in April, 2006, and we just released the latest version, which features an in-depth interview with Gary Richards from The 2 G's radio show.
Speaking of The 2 G's, co-host Graham Bell just released a new audio documentary entitled "The Day My Team Came to Tinseltown," which is very well done. It reminds me of the documentaries you often hear on the BBC World Service. In this case, Bell talks about Chelsea's visit to Los Angeles for pre-season training. Bell does a brilliant job at mixing in appropriate music, audio from interviews, and puts his experience in the music and radio industry to good measure by producing a top rate segment. Whether you're a Chelsea fan or not, be sure to listen to it.

Secret Handshakes Within the World of the Premiership
As always, it's another thought provoking piece from The Guardian. The article includes some revealing information including a quote from Tevez from a few months ago about Chelsea's advances, Tevez wearing a Man United shirt and a possible new trend in terms of future transfer signings where the player's contracts, and livelihood, are owned by investment groups instead of clubs.
To me, though, it makes me wonder what revelations we'll learn in the future about the underbelly of football clubs and all of the business behind it. Whether it's the Russian mafia claims against Abramovich at Chelsea, or the "something is fishy" remarks about West Ham, it'll be interesting to discover what is really going on behind the scenes. What gentlemen agreements are being made? What secret handshakes are we not seeing?
For us, the public, all we see is what's on the pitch. Sure, we can enjoy it, but some of us want to know more. In time, I'm sure we'll find out.
Late breaking news. David Gill from Manchester United said this morning on BBC's Sportsweek program that they turned down opportunities to add Tevez and Mascherano to Man United. Read the story here, but to me, it sounds like United are making excuses for missing out on the signings of two of the most promising young players in the world. I'm sure Gill is under pressure to respond to United fans worldwide who must be wondering how the two Argentines slipped through their grasps.
West Ham United Saga Shrouded In Mystery
We're not even into week three of the Premiership, but who would have expected the Tevez and Mascherano transfers to ever happen and to West Ham of all places?Never before have transfer signings been clouded in so much mystery. No one publicly knows what the transfer fees were, how long their contracts are for, and how the proposed takeover of the club is tied to the whole events. Right now, there appears to be a Middle Eastern consortium and a Georgian billionaire interested (Georgia, as in eastern Europe and not the southeastern US state).
Football writer Patrick Barclay in the Sunday Telegraph demands an end to secrecy and asks for more transparency regarding transfers. Although not hopeful, he would like to see the government step in to require more openness from clubs, especially when ticket holders pay so much each season. Read the article here.
The Independent newspaper, meanwhile, has a fascinating article about the Tevez and Mascherano deal. Writer Ronald Atkin takes the approach of comparing the transfer signings to the Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa signings by Spurs from the late 70s by Spurs. Read that article here.
Whatever happens, the next few weeks to months are going to be a soap opera at West Ham United with the takeover talks and the play of Tevez and Mascherano. It's incredible to think, but next Sunday's West Ham versus Aston Villa match is going to be one of the most anticipated matches in a very long time. Not only will be Villa and Hammers fans be watching, but the neutrals will be watching this one more closely than ever before to see how the Argentines fair.
Just a few weeks ago, how many of you would have been excited by watching Villa versus West Ham United match? But now that Martin O'Neill and Tevez/Mascherano will be involved, the match takes on a whole new importance.
Did Anyone See the Luxembourg-Netherlands Match?
In all of my years of watching football on TV (nearly 30), this was the worst coverage I've ever seen. Although I'm sure it wasn't Setanta's fault, it did make Setanta look poor in my opinion.
For those of you who didn't see it, here's what happened: During the beginning of the match it seemed that the wrong video feed was being played. Sure, we were able to see the match but while you were watching, the live video started rewinding, then fast-forwarding, then pausing and back-and-forth for several minutes. It almost seemed that they were playing the wrong video feed and the feed that was being played was the one from the video editing room.
To make matters worse, the camera angles were horrible. At times the camera was zoomed so close to the action on the field that you couldn't see what else was going on around the player. Othertimes, the camera would zoom in and zoom out making me feel sick from the motion going so fast.
As all of this was happening, the commentator appeared silent for the most part, but now and again he made some comments alluding to the fact that "we're back again," only for the video to carry on with its horrible display again.
And, of course, we can't forget the audio. It sounded as if the commentator was speaking from a tin box. A crawl across the bottom of the screen apologized for the audio technical difficulties, but why one wasn't displayed to apologize for the video difficulties, I'm amazed.
I managed to watch the Dutch score their only goal of the match, and then quickly turned it off. Hopefully the coverage didn't get worse from there, but this was the first match I've ever watched on TV that was unwatchable.
I'm guessing that the coverage had nothing to do with Setanta, and that they were at the mercy of the company providing the feed for the video and audio. But my oh my I've never seen a football match look so bad. It makes you appreciate the job that TWI does.

Exclusive Interview with Ronnie Whelan
The latest EPL Talk Podcast is now available featuring an interview with Liverpool and Republic of Ireland's Ronnie Whelan. The midfield maestro discusses his most memorable experiences including the 1989 FA Cup Final and 1984 European Cup, what Liverpool manager Bob Paisley was like, the MLS team he almost managed, and much more. It's an abbreviated interview only because Ronnie had to run to a speaking engagement, but it's definitely good to hear from him nonetheless.
Thanks to Roy Yates at the Liverpool Supporters Club at http://www.uslfc.com for setting up the interview.
